J-K Guv visits Baramulla,lays wreath at war memorial

The Governor also presented mementos to the civilians and retired soldiers.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra today visited north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Sikh War Memorial on the commemoration of the Infantry Day.

The Governor laid the wreath at Sikh War Memorial,on Srinagar-Muzafarabad road,50 km from here,and also paid homage at Mohammad Maqbool Sherwani Memorial.

Army had landed in the Kashmir Valley on this day in 1947 to fight off thousands of Pakistani tribals who had managed to reach Baramulla district.

In Baramulla,Governor was received by General Officer Commanding (GOC) strategic 15 Corps Lt Gen S A Hasnain and GOC 19 Infantry Division Maj Gen Bipin Rawat.

The functions were organised by the army to commemorate the sacrifices made by jawans while fighting the Pakistani raiders in 1947.

Vohra lauded the bravery of the officers and soldiers of the Army in guarding the territory of the country with devotion and commitment.

The Governor also presented mementos to the civilians and retired soldiers,some of whom had been involved in fighting the Pakistani raiders.
