Hold simple marriages: Sheila Dikshit tells partymen

There is no Kanwar Singh Tanwar - he's not an MLA - I don't know if he's in Congress, says Delhi CM.

With a city politician recently holding a lavish wedding of his son estimated to have cost crores of rupees,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday asked Congressmen to hold such functions in a “simple” manner and avoid wastage of resources like food items.

Following her remarks at a Congress Legislature Party meeting,a resolution was passed by the party legislators condemning the trend of lavish spendings in weddings and other social functions.

Though she did not mention Kanwar Singh Tanwar’s name but she was apparently referring to the politician who reportedly spent over Rs 200 crores on the wedding of his son earlier this month,an estimate refuted by him.

“I have told the CLP that we should not resort to extravagant spendings. We should avoid such wasteful expenditure. I told them that care should be taken to ensure that such functions do not affect the traffic and disturb the neighbourhood,” she said later.

Dikshit said she will write a letter to Police Commissioner B K Gupta to strictly enforce all relevant laws for holding of social functions.

“The CLP expressed its concern over the lavish spending in social functions including marriages. The present trend is making lives of the common man burdensome. A resolution condemning this trend was unanimously passed in the CLP meeting,” a statement issued by Chief Minister’s Office said.

When pointed out that Tanwar, who held a lavish wedding of his son,is a Congressman,Dikshit said she do not have any idea whether he has been taken into the party.

“There is no Kanwar Singh Tanwar. He is not an MLA. I do not know if he is a Congress member. I have no idea. He contested the last Assembly election on a BSP ticket. He lost it. I don’t have any idea whether he has been taken into the Congress,” she said.

The wedding ceremony of Tanwar’s son Lalit Tanwar with his bride Yogita Jaunapuria was touted as the most expensive wedding in the city in recent times.

At the CLP meeting, the members resolved to reasonably spend on their social functions and avoid wasteful expenditure and wastage of resources including food items.

“We also resolved to organise such functions in a simple, sober manner. The CLP exhorted the people to restrict expenditure on social functions,” said an MLA.

The meeting requested the city government to address letters to the MCD and Delhi Police for strict implementation of existing rules in respect of organising public and social functions beyond 10 pm.

As per rules, the use of loudspeakers and public address system is not permitted after 10 pm but often the rule is violated.

“This will go a long way in curbing noise pollution and blockage on the roads. The agencies may also be asked to enforce orders in respect of providing parking space within the farm houses where a large number of social functions are organised,” the resolution said.
