Give equal opportunity to women: Sharad Pawar

‘Women form 50 pc of the population, there will be no progress without equal opportunity for them.’

Unless the fairer sex, representing 50 per cent of the country’s population is given an equal opportunity to participate in the social progress, there is no way that the country will develop,NCP chief Sharad Pawar said on Wednesday.

He said society’s “outlook” towards women has to change as they have proved time and again that they are no different from men when it comes to capabilities.

Inaugurating a national training camp of the mahila wing of the NCP,Pawar favoured increasing the strength of women in the police force and the armed forces,a suggestion, which he said he had put across when he was the Defence Minister.

“Unless women are given an opportunity in different fields, how would they perform and gain confidence? We have to pay attention in this regard,” he said.

Citing the example of Indira Gandhi,he said,”the late Prime Minister displayed what women can do if they are given an opportunity in public life.”

Observing that giving equal rights to women on inheriting property would also give them a sense of security, the NCP chief said 50 per cent of the seats for the forthcoming elections to the local self governing bodies in Maharashtra would be reserved for women.
