Chennai: Scolded,class IX student stabs teacher to death

Student attacks teacher in classroom,was berated over something; cops say had come prepared.

A class 9 student of a Chennai school stabbed his teacher to death on Thursday,apparently enraged that she should complain to his parents about his poor show in studies.

Science and Hindi teacher Uma Maheshwari,40, of St Mary’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in north Chennai was sitting in a classroom in between periods when the boy attacked her around noon.

He stabbed her repeatedly,inflicting at least five deep wounds on her face,throat and stomach. Bleeding profusely,Uma Maheshwari died before she could be given medical help at a hospital nearby.

Students,teachers and other staff,who rushed to the class hearing Maheshwari’s cries,caught the boy before he could escape. He was later handed over to the police.

Cops grilled him to find that he was upset the teacher regularly scolded him and had also informed his parents about his poor performance. He came prepared today,the cops said,hiding the knife inside a a book.

School administrator Bosco Periyanayagam said the boy was regular in attendance but was not concentrating on his studies. Maheshwari had recently put down her remarks about his progress in the school diary,for his parents to see. Police believe this could have triggered the attack. Further investigations are on.

As news of the murder spread,shocked parents rushed to the school to take their children home. Authorities have closed the school for the next two days.
