Police have directed the residents living near sensitive polling booths in Kanpur,which goes to polls on April 30,to submit their licensed weapons to nearest police stations.
“All the police stations have been directed to ask the owners of licensed arms to submit them before the elections,” nodal officer SP Ram Lal Verma said.
“There are 3002 polling booths in Kanpur,out of which 425 are considered to be vulnerable to communal violence. Out of these Bilhor has the highest number where 103 booths have been declared as sensitive,” he said.
Other areas with sensitive polling booths are Govindnagar (41),Sisamau(26),Kidwainagar (16 ),Kalyanpur(21),Maharajpur (35),Ghatampur(45),Cantt.(10),Aryanagar(57) and Bithur(71).
“Additional force will be deployed on these booths and the entire polling process will be videographed on the election day,” Verma said.
According to police records,23,800 people in the city have licensed arms. The number of single barrel rifle is 6731 and double barrel rifles is 7173. Other licensed arms include 3063 rifles,5721 revolvers,774 pistols,four carbine,three air-guns,seven knives and a sword.
