Within the first hour of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, Rajya Sabha had to be adjourned for around 15 minutes following a back and forth between Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the House J P Nadda on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor.

After Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar indicated that he was disinclined to entertain notices by Opposition leaders to discuss the issue under Rule 267, Kharge said: “Sir, I have given the notice under Rule 267 as per the rulebook. The Pahalgam attack took place on April 22. So far, the terrorists have not been caught or killed. And, they (the government) repeatedly told us that they have hit their bases and they died (in Operation Sindoor).”

“All parties have given unconditional support to strengthen the country, maintain unity, and give moral strength to our Army. We unquestioningly supported them… Now, I want that from their end we need to know what happened. There was intelligence failure, the L-G has said, we have not said. CDS, deputy chief and a senior defence attache made some sensitive revelations… What you told the world, what you told us, and what you told the people of the country, we should get the information,” the Congress leader added.

He continued: “The US President (Donald) Trump said 24 times that the war ended because of his intervention. This is humiliating for the country.”

Dhankhar said Kharge had made his point and gave the floor to the Leader of the House J P Nadda. In turn, Nadda got up and first wished Kharge on his birthday. He then went on to say that Kharge was given the floor to comment on Dhankhar’s ruling under Rule 267. “He did not speak about Rule 267, instead he started talking about the minute details of Pahalgam (attack) and Operation Sindoor.”

Nadda went on, “The message should not go out to the country that the government does not want a discussion on Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor. We will have a discussion. We will do it in detail, we will present all the points to the country and the world.”

He added, “This kind of operation has not been undertaken ever after Independence, which has (now) happened under the guidance of PM Modi.” He quickly stated that he was not going into the details.

Nadda said BJP member Samik Bhattacharya has asked for a discussion on the matter under Rule 167 and it will take place after the time is decided. “We are ready to discuss everything,” he stated.

Dhankhar added that he will ensure that a discussion takes place on the issue for as much time as the members want.
