After a cement company acquired land and 500 houses, including his, in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu four years ago, farmer Vidhyadhar Yadav believed he should have gotten Rs 6 crore in compensation.

His house was finally demolished on November 5 this year, and Yadav, unhappy at being offered just Rs 4 crore, told the district administration that he and his family would die by suicide on December 11 if they did not agree to his demands for Rs 6 crore and a job at the cement factory.

A day before this deadline, the administration sent 99 police personnel to his current place of residence to make sure that he and his family don’t take the drastic step. Then, last week, the administration sent him a bill of Rs 9,91,557 for the police deployment and directed him to pay it in seven days.

Yadav, who currently lives in a rented house provided by the company to those displaced from the area, told The Indian Express, “I asked for Rs 6 crore compensation and a job at the cement factory. My farmland had already been acquired two years ago and on November 5, they demolished my home. I did not accept the Rs 4 crore compensation and told the district administration that if my demands were not fulfilled, I would commit suicide with my family members on December 11.”

On December 10, the administration sent the police personnel to his residence, he said.

“After pressure from the government, on December 15, I accepted Rs 4 crore, but they have not agreed to give me a job in the factory. On December 17, the administration sent me a notice for almost Rs 9.9 lakh,” he added.

He said he would go to court against the notice as he had never asked for a police force to be sent to his home. He also said the notice was part of “tactics to pressure him”.

Jhunjhunu SP Sharad Chaudhary said police were deployed at Yadav’s rented house on December 10 to keep his family safe. He also said it was important to set an example so that other people do not resort to such measures.

“Almost 500 people vacated their land after taking compensation. Only Vidhyadhar Yadav’s house was remaining. The SDM, MLAs, and many others have tried to convince him to sign the papers, but he has not. Mining for cement has been going on for a long time around Yadav’s house, putting the lives of his family members at stake. He was unnecessarily creating hurdles…,” the SP said.

“We sent the police officials on December 10 to keep his family safe. And this unnecessary threat to the administration had to be stopped. So, we have asked him to bear the expense of the officials,” said Chaudhary.
