Rail connectivity to Mizoram: PM Modi likely to inaugurate Bairabi-Sairang railway project this week

Rail Connectivity to Mizoram, Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the long-awaited Bairabi-Sairang railway line project this week. Spanning 51.38 km, this rail link is set to boost Mizoram’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) while providing the cheaper mode of transport. This railway project falls under the administrative control of the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) zone. 

Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line Inauguration Date

According to PTI, PM Modi will visit Mizoram on September 13 to inaugurate the new Bairabi-Sairang railway. “Officials in Mizoram on Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mizoram on September 13 to inaugurate the new Bairabi-Sairang railway.

Multiple officials of the Mizoram government on Monday said they have received information that from Aizawl, the PM will fly to Manipur, his first visit since the ethnic violence broke out in the state in May 2023. However, they said that they are yet to receive the final itinerary of the PM’s visit,” the PTI report said.

Bairabi-Sairang Rail Project: Stations

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line project features four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang-Sihhmui. This infrastructure project features 32 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 89 minor bridges. Notably, the tallest pier, P-4 (bridge no. 196), stands at 104 meters, which is taller than the Qutub Minar.

Bairabi–Sairang New Line Railway Project

The Bairabi–Sairang new railway line project has set direct rail connectivity to the state capital, Aizawl, for the first time. This achievement will significantly enhance passenger and freight movement, boost socio-economic growth, and fulfill a long-standing aspiration of the people of Mizoram.

The total length of tunnels in this project is 12,853 meters. The project also includes 5 Road over Bridges & 6 Road under Bridges. This new line project is divided into four sections, i.e. Bairabi – Hortoki, Hortoki – Kawnpui, Kawnpui – Mualkhang and Mualkhang – Sairang.
