Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi arrived in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday a two-day visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli and adjoining Amethi district.

Gandhi arrived at the Lucknow airport, where he was given a warm welcome by senior Congress leaders, including state congress president Ajay Rai and Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma. He then travelled by road to Rae Bareli, where local residents and party workers greeted him.

This is his fourth visit to his constituency after winning the election. In Rae Bareli, he inaugurated a 2 megawatt solar roof plant and charging station at Visaka Industries Limited and distributed solar-powered carts to beneficiaries. He later unveiled and garlanded the statue of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Civil Lines.

He also chaired a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) along with MP Kishori Lal, public representatives and senior government officials. The meeting focused on development projects in the region, law and order, and public grievance redressal.

Later, Gandhi visited the Rail Coach Factory, Rae Bareli, where he interacted with officials and held detailed discussions on operational and development-related matters. He also held meeting of Congress booth committee presidents at Dalmau. He felicitated two students each from Amethi and Rae Bareli who topped the district in the high school examinations, said Congress leader and former MLC Deepak Singh.

“He (Rahul Gandhi) has a long-standing relationship with Uttar Pradesh. The Gandhis have familial ties with the Raebareli-Amethi region,” Ajay Rai told PTI.

Gandhi, who is scheduled to visit Amethi on Wednesday, is likely to visit the residence of 31-year-old businessman Shubham Dwivedi in Kanpur’s  Chakeria area to extend condolences to the family. Dwivedi was among the 26 people killed in a terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam last week.

When contacted, Shubham Dwivedi’s Saurabh Dwivedi said security officials attached with Rahul Gandhi informed them that the Congress leader was likely to visit their home around 4 pm on Wednesday.

On Monday, he, along with Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a special session of Parliament in light of the terror attack.

A Congress leader said Gandhi’s visit to Amethi, where he will attend functions and interact with party workers, reflects his promise during the 2024 general elections to give equal attention to both Rae Bareli and Amethi.

After representing Amethi in the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms—2004, 2009, and 2014—Rahul contested from Rae Bareli in 2024, while party loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma was fielded from Amethi against then Union minister Smriti Irani. The Congress secured victories in both constituencies.
