To take on Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad, BJP picks Kerala chief K Surendran

K Surendran is a seasoned candidate, having contested all three Lok Sabha elections since 2009.

The BJP on Sunday announced four more candidates for Lok Sabha elections in Kerala, which will go to the polls on April 26. Of the 20 seats in the state, the BJP-led NDA had earlier announced candidates for the 16 other seats. CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF have already fielded candidates in all constituencies.

In Wayanad seat, which is in the limelight because its sitting MP is Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, BJP has fielded party state president K Surendran. CPI national leader Annie Raja is the LDF candidate there.

Surendran is a seasoned candidate, having contested all three Lok Sabha elections since 2009. Surendran also contested four Assembly elections. In 2021, he contested from Konni and Manjeshwar seats simultaneously. In 2016, Surendran had lost Manjeshwar seat by a mere 86 votes.

In Ernakulam, Dr K S Radhakrishan, who had served as the chairman of the state public service commission and vice chancellor of the Sanskrit university during the Congress regime, is the BJP candidate. In the Assembly elections of 2021, he contested from Tripunithura seat in Ernakulam district, but lost.

Actor G Krishnakumar is BJP candidate in Kollam. A member of the BJP national council, Krishnakumar had contested the 2021 Assembly elections from Thiruvananthapuram. In Alathur (SC) seat, former college principal Dr T N Sarasu, is the BJP candidate.

Sarasu had hit headlines in 2016 when she was serving as the principal of Government Victoria College in Palakkad. A group of students belonging to the SFI, the student wing of the CPI(M), had prepared a symbolic grave at the campus on the occasion of her retirement.
