In a bid to introduce more transparency in its fund-raising in the wake of demonetisation, the Aam Adami Party has asked its candidates not to accept donations above Rs 20,000 without the PAN number of the donor. The party has been accepting huge donations from NRIs and collecting funds by organising ‘Paid Lunch or Dinner’ programmes.
On Thursday night, the fund raising committee of AAP held a meeting with party leaders and candidates, including their campaign managers, at the place of Dr Sanjeev Sharam, AAP’s candidate from Jalandhar Centre Assembly constituency. The meeting was convened by Gulshan Chhabra, AAP’s secretary for Punjab who looks after fund raising, who laid out ‘Dos and Don’ts’ for candidates pertaining to fund raising.
All eight candidates of Jalandhar district, except Chandan Grewal, who was not well, attended the meeting. The committee also reportedly asked the candidates to step up their election campaign and look after the campaign expenditure in their respective constituencies.
Earlier, the party has changed two candidates for “poor campaign”. Sources said candidates were asked to accept election funds from Indian citizens only, and not from any outsider, including NRIs with foreign passports. “Only NRIs with Indian Passports can donate to the party’s account, from where the money will be transferred to a particular candidate’s constituency (not on his name) to whom NRI wants to donate,” said Dr Sanjeev Sharma, himself a party candidate.
Also, candidates have been asked to make payments either through cheques or through online system. They were also
made aware about accepting donations through “Aap Ka Daan”, a mobile application.
