Since the woman kept resisting, Vohra drove back to the parking lot in Sector 34 where she was pulled out of the car, dragged and beaten.
The Chandigarh Police on Tuesday arrested Atul Vohra, a marketing professional, for allegedly assaulting a woman with an intention to outrage her modesty. The action was taken on a complaint which the woman had sent in an e-mail to all senior police officers of Chandigarh. The incident had happened on January 5.
According to the complaint, Vohra was the woman’s colleague in an office a few years ago. The woman, a resident of Dera Bassi, was looking for a job and asked Vohra to help. He promised to arrange a job in a private firm in Sector 16. On January 5, he called her and asked her to meet him in Sector 16.
After the two met at the Sector 16 market, Vohra asked the woman to sit in his car. He told her that the person who could provide her a job was in a meeting and drove her to Sector 25 where one of his friends joined them. From there, the three went to Sector 34 and Vohra parked the car in a vacant parking lot opposite the gurdwara, notes the complaint.
Vohra and his friend then started consuming alcohol. Vohra allegedly forced the victim to drink as well. After getting drunk, the accused outraged her modesty. In order to prevent the woman from getting off, Vohra started driving, took the vehicle through different sectors, all the time misbehaving with her, even as his friend tried to stop him, says the complaint.
Since the woman kept resisting, Vohra drove back to the parking lot in Sector 34 where she was pulled out of the car, dragged and beaten. “He kicked me several times and left me lying on the ground. He also used obscene language and verbally abused me,” the complaint reads.
“I did not know his intentions when he asked me to meet him. I knew him for a long time and he had promised me a job. That is the reason I agreed to meet him,” the complaint states.
The woman was medically examined and her statement was recorded by the police on Monday evening. Following this, a case was registered against Vohra under Section 354-A (assaulting a woman with an intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 17 Police Station.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central) Ashish Kapoor said, “During the investigation, it was found that Vohra’s friend tried to help the woman. So, a case was registered only against Vohra.”
The accused will be produced in a local court on Wednesday. Vohra, 40, is married and has two kids. The victim, 30, is a mother of two and is separated from her husband.
