Hundreds of members of the Saini community on Wednesday caused a ruckus outside the religious dera — known as Kutia in Sirsa — managed by the Sri Tara Baba Charitable Trust,of which former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda, detained in the Geetika Sharma suicide case,is the president.

The protesters, who claimed themselves to be the followers of the saint Tara Baba of Sirsa, accused Kanda of having tarnished the image of their Guru following him being booked in the Geetika Sharma suicide case and demanded that the huge boards bearing Kanda and his brother Gobind Kanda’s pictures — installed at the entrance gate at Kutia — be removed.

Apprehending tension, heavy police force was deployed at the entrance of Kutia, where the Kanda family had been organising religious discourses. The police presence averted any further tension between the protesters and Kanda supporters, who had also gathered at the spot to prevent the protesters from entering Kutia.

“The members of the Saini community wanted a board bearing Tara Baba’s picture and the Trust’s name to be put up at the entrance of Kutia, rather than Gopal and Gobind Kanda’s pictures. We allowed them to do so as they are also the members of the Trust,” said DSP Satbir Sheoran.

Sirsa municipal councillor Leeladhar Saini, who was leading the protest, accused Gopal Kanda of allegedly siphoning off crores of rupees in the name Sri Tara Baba Charitable Trust. He alleged that Kanda had constituted another trust with a similar name,Baba Tara Charitable Trust, and made his relatives — his wife, his brother Gobind Kanda and his wife, and a few others — its trustees.

While speaking to The Indian Express,Saini said: “Kanda has constructed a huge building at the entrance of Kutia. This place is being used to hold his party meetings. His armed goons remain deployed there. Kanda had even pasted MDLR group’s stickers on the the vehicles purchased in the name of the Trust.”

He added: “The original trust,Sri Tara Baba Charitable Trust, was constituted in 2004. There were 11 trustees. However, within a few years, without informing anybody,Kanda constituted another Trust with a similar name — Baba Tara Charitable Trust — and kept on misusing Tara Baba’s name for his personal gains.”

Bollywood starlet Nupur Mehta is likely to be questioned by the police in connection with the Geetika Sharma suicide case.

Nupur was earlier employed with Gopal Goyal Kanda’s MDLR group as vice president of the corporate communications department. She and Geetika were later asked to manage a casino in Goa,which was owned by Kanda.

In April 2009,Geetika had approached the Panaji police, accusing Nupur and Ankita Singh, who used to handle the operations of the Goa hotel owned by Kanda,of stealing her laptop and other belongings from her hotel room.

The police have now tracked mails of Geetika being allegedly harassed by Kanda and Aruna Chadha to withdraw the case. Therefore,Nupur could be asked to join investigations soon, said officials.

“Nupur’s question is important because Geetika was being forced to withdraw the case against her and Ankita. Ankita is the woman who is suspected to have been close to Kanda. The two women are not directly involved in the case, but can shed light and help us connect some missing links,” said a police official.

Police sources said Ankita is currently in Singapore.

The police are also questioning an employee of MDLR as a ‘suspect’ in the case. HR assistant Shiv Roop was allegedly involved in sending fraudulent mails to Geetika after creating a fake email address. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Dr P Karunakaran said,“So far Shiv Roop has not been arrested. He is a suspect in the case. We are investigating his role.”

Preliminary investigation revealed that Shiv Roop had created the email ID ‘ bhasir.emirates@hotmail.com’ and sent a mail threatening Geetika by posing as a director of the Emirates group. The mail was sent on October 1,2010.

The police, meanwhile, have said that a fresh charge for destroying evidence would be added to the FIR against Kanda. Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dharmendra Kumar said,“We will be adding IPC section 201 to the FIR which is destruction of evidence.”
