Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday commissioned three pivotal naval assets — INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer — at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday. The commissioning of these advanced naval combatants marks a significant milestone in India’s defence capabilities, reinforcing the nation’s ambition to become a global leader in defence while bolstering its pursuit of self-reliance, as stated by PM Modi.

INS Surat

📌 INS Surat, the final and fourth ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, is recognised as one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated destroyers.

📌 Boasting 75% indigenous content, it is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry, sensor systems, and cutting-edge network-centric capabilities.

INS Nilgiri

📌 INS Nilgiri, the inaugural ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau.

📌 This vessel features advanced attributes for enhanced stealth, survivability, and seakeeping, marking a major advancement in the design of indigenous frigates.

INS Vaghsheer

📌 INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and last submarine under the P75 Scorpene Project, showcases India’s growing expertise in submarine construction.

📌 Developed in collaboration with the Naval Group of France, the submarine incorporates advanced technologies and strengthens India’s position in underwater warfare, according to a release from the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau.

📌Additionally, INS Vaghsheer’s modular design facilitates future upgrades, including air-independent propulsion technology.

The successful commissioning of these vessels marks a pivotal advancement in India’s defence self-sufficiency and its indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. All three platforms were designed and built entirely in India, reflecting the nation’s growing competence in defence production. After rigorous trials, the assets are now fully operational, poised to strengthen the Navy’s maritime power, as confirmed by the officials.
