Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election and expressed confidence that bilateral ties between the two countries on global issues will continue to grow.
Erdogan won the re-election on Sunday, extending his rule into a third decade as the country reels under high inflation and the aftermath of an earthquake that levelled entire cities.
Modi tweeted, “Congratulations @RTErdogan on re-election as the President of Türkiye! I am confident that our bilateral ties and cooperation on global issues will continue to grow in the coming times.”
The PM’s congratulatory message to Erdogan, within hours of the election results being declared, is significant, given that Turkey did not participate in the G20 tourism working group meeting in Srinagar this month.
With ties affected over the last few years, the two leaders had held an unannounced meeting in Samarkand in September 2022 on the sidelines of the SCO summit. Modi then underlined the focus was on economic ties.
