The Ministry also said there was a discussion on the issue even when Foreign Minister Wang Yi was in Delhi.
It is a fact that there is a large and ongoing trade deficit between India and China, and this has been a matter of discussion over several years. What are the five principles of Panchsheel? After India’s independence in 1947 and the creation of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the two countries tried to frame terms of engagement. One of the sticking issues was the fate of Tibet.
After many rounds of negotiations, on April 29, 1954, Agreement on Trade and Intercourse between the Tibet region of China and India was signed, which included the delineation of Panchsheel, or the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence.
The principles are:
1. Mutual respect for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty
2. Mutual non-aggression
3. Mutual non-interference
4. Equality and mutual benefit
5. Peaceful co-existence.”

The bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin on Sunday has aroused considerable global interest, given that it took place against the backdrop of unexpected turbulence and discord in India-US bilateral ties, triggered by the petulant weaponisation of trade and tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
The outcome of Tianjin is to be cautiously welcomed. It is a summit-level political endorsement by the two leaders of the broad agreements arrived at during the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Delhi earlier in August. It is instructive that the official statement released by New Delhi referred to both leaders welcoming the “positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting” in Kazan, Russia, last year and reaffirming that the two countries were “development partners and not rivals, and that their differences should not turn into disputes.”

In barely three days, India has set in motion a significant diplomatic effort to rearrange its great-power relations amid the turbulence unleashed over the last six months by US President Donald Trump. Tokyo and Tianjin, two cities Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited in the last few days, could not be more different, geopolitically.
Tokyo, the capital of Japan, has been one of Washington’s closest allies since the Second World War. Tianjin, a port city that once served imperial Beijing, now represents China’s rise as a challenger to American primacy in Asia and beyond.
That India has simultaneously deepened ties with Japan and accelerated re-engagement with China—two Asian great powers with little strategic convergence—is not so much a testament to Delhi’s diplomatic “magic touch” as it is to the ripple effects of Trump’s dramatic reorientation of US policy.

Prime Minister Modi invited President Xi to the BRICS Summit that India will be hosting in 2026. President Xi thanked PM Modi for the invitation and expressed China’s support for India’s BRICS presidency.
"Both China and India are at a critical stage of development and revitalization. They should focus on development as their greatest common denominator, supporting, promoting, and achieving mutual success," said President Xi at the meet.
PM Modi said, "Faced with high uncertainty in the global economy, it is crucial for India and China, as important global economies, to strengthen cooperation. Indian officials have been cautious about the meeting with Xi being framed as a major bilateral meeting. For Delhi, this is a visit for a multilateral summit and a bilateral with the host leader is not unusual.
The two leaders are expected to give their stamp of approval on a calendar of activities to be organised to mark the 75th anniversary of bilateral relation.
A senior Chinese diplomat told The Indian Express that he was “hopeful of a fruitful meeting”.
