The city of Dholpur on Sunday was adorned with tricolour balloons and posters of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra rolled into Rajasthan and made a stop at the city – for a few minutes.

More than 6,000 people had gathered at a ground in Dholpur since 3 pm, waiting for Rahul Gandhi to arrive with the yatra, which had earlier in the day made a halt at Agra. It was at 6.10 pm that Rahul finally reached the Dholpur venue, and 6.19 pm when he addressed the crowd. By 6.21, he wrapped up his speech and said his goodbyes.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and top Rajasthan Congress leaders Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot also spoke at the venue, along with Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara.

By 6.30 pm, the event had wound down and the crowd began to disperse. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will now be on hold until March 2, when it will start again from Dholpur and head to Madhya Pradesh.

In his two-minute address, Rahul Gandhi said, “Last year, we took out the Bharat Jodo Yatra to unite the country, and this year, from east to west, this Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is being taken out to fight against the injustice happening to the people of this country.”

“There is social and economic injustice. Injustice towards women, children, farmers, and labourers… We promise you all that once the BJP is defeated, things will change for the better,” he said.

He then thanked the crowd and left for the airport at Agra.

Priyanka, who spoke before Rahul, said the country was in a dark period in which big businessmen are taking over every aspect of government. “In the farmers’ movement, farmers are being attacked by the Central government. At every step of life, people are facing injustice and problems. Hence, we organised this yatra to unite people and fight against this injustice,” she said.

Sachin Pilot got an enthusiastic ovation from the youth in the crowd as he took the stage. He said that in the last 10 years, the BJP has not done anything to benefit people. He also accused the ruling party of being behind the suspension of several MPs from Parliament, and of passing laws without making proper consultations.

“BJP is not a party that will benefit the public, but one that harasses innocents as we can see at farmers’ protests. With this yatra, we are trying to unite the public, which has been facing the problem of divisive politics for so long,” said Pilot.

Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, in his address, stressed on the need for unity against divisive politics.
