People who denied the existence of Lord Ram are now chanting his name as a result of PM Narendra Modi’s strategy, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday.

Singh was speaking at the launch of a book, Tryst With Ayodhya: Decolonisation of India, by Balbir Punj.

“In this country some people had raised questions on the existence of Ram. He was described as a fictional character. An attempt was made to obliterate the birthplace of Ram in Ayodhya. Time has thrown such people to the margins of history. Nowadays some people have started singing Ram Dhun out of fear of being marginalized in history. This was the strategy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that even the people who were questioning the existence of Ram, his universality and eternity, were forced to chant the name of Ram today,” Singh said.

The defence minister said that it was after five hundred years of continuous struggle that justice had been done to Ayodhya.

“I believe this is the beginning of India’s cultural revival and restoration of national pride. Ram is the consciousness of India. Ayodhya is the ‘nuclear center’ of India’s cultural, political and social values. The five hundred year battle for the Janmasthan temple was a conspiracy to crush our cultural consciousness,” he said.

Singh suggested that the Ram temple “will end appeasement politics” in the country.

“The foundation of an all-inclusive society beyond caste and class will be strengthened. How Ayodhya’s birthplace temple will become the ‘seed center’ temple of Ram’s ideals, Lakshman Rekha’s dignity, Lokmangal’s governance system, destruction of terror and Injustice,” he said.

Singh said Ram was not just a king but a folk hero. “He was the first to give the concept of an egalitarian society. Ram is one, but the vision is different. Do you know why? Because Ram is beyond caste and class. He has a close relationship with humans, monkeys, forest dwellers, animals, humans and demons,” Singh said.

According to the defence minister the five Tirthankaras of Jain society come from the lineage of Rama.

“Dalit saint Ravidas comes to Ayodhya from Banaras to visit Ram’s birthplace. Shankaracharya, the founder of Advaita also came here and Vallabhacharya, the originator of Vishishtadvaita also came here. Lord Buddha lived here for many years. Ram is not bound by any ideology. He is not limited to any one mould. History tells that from time to time, heads of every sect, ideology and sect kept visiting Ram’s birthplace to express their faith. Sikh Guru Nanakdev visited Ayodhya and visited his birthplace,” he said.

Singh emphasised that Ayodhya does not divide but “unites the soul to Brahma, the soul to God, the devotee to God, the king to his people, the man to man, the broken to the unbroken, the forward to the backward, the drop to the ocean, the forest dweller to the state.”

Singh said the Ram Mandir will be the pinnacle of Sanatan faith.

“He will be the symbol of the changing India. He will become the guarantee of the new India which will look the world in the eye and declare that Ram was, Ram is and Ram will remain,” Singh said.
