Parliament Winter Session HighlightsCongress chief Mallikarjun Kharge raised concerns over conduct of the Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar

Winter session of Parliament Highlights: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday raised concerns over conduct of the Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar and sought his removal. While admitting that since 1952, no resolution has ever been brought to remove a Vice President, he criticised the current Rajya Sabha chairman for behaving in a way that undermines the dignity of the office. “It seems he is working like a spokesperson of the government to get a good post next,” said Kharge, adding that the chairman’s tendency to target opposition leaders and frequently praise the government signals a troubling shift towards partisanship.

What happened in Parliament?   Amid uproar in both the Houses, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met the Speaker and urged for discussion on all matters including the Adani row. Gandhi also asked Om Birla to expunge the “derogatory” remarks made against him in the Lower House. Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after Opposition created ruckus seeking the removal of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. On Tuesday, Opposition INDIA bloc MPs gave notice to bring no-confidence motion against Dhankhar, accusing him of “partisan” conduct in the Upper House. Slamming the NDA-led government, Gandhi said the Modi government has turned the lifelines of the masses into private entities for the rich. He urged the Centre to "stop using PSBs as an unlimited source of funds for their fraudulent friends."

Gandhi's post read, "Public Sector Banks were designed to give every Indian access to credit. The Modi government has turned these lifelines of the masses into private financiers for only the rich and powerful corporations.

I met with a delegation from the All India Banking Officers Confederation, who expressed their distress at the state of our public sector banks and the impact of it on common people.

    - Public Sector Banks are being forced to prioritise profit over people and are thus unable to serve the public effectively

    - With staff shortages and a toxic work environment, they are expected to reach unachievable targets without a level playing field

    - Women employees are not given equal opportunity or advancement and forced to bear the brunt of dissatisfied public

Modi govt must stop using PSBs as an unlimited source of funds for their fraudulent friends. There’s also more to a public sector bank than a dividend cheque to the govt at the end of the year."
