Opposition MLAs Thursday staged a walkout from the Tripura Assembly after a congratulatory motion was moved on the victory of the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha polls.
The motion moved by Speaker Biswas Bandhu Sen states, “The general election for the 542 seats of the 18th Lok Sabha, known as one of the grand celebrations of democracy in India, was completed last June. In this election, 65.79 percent of voters participated and expressed their independent opinions to elect representatives to Parliament. This Assembly extends its heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the electorate, all the elected representatives of the newly formed 18th Lok Sabha, and the newly formed central government.”
The motion was vociferously supported by the members of the treasury benches, many of whom chanted ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Vishwaguru, Vishwaguru’.
Meanwhile, objecting to the motion, Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary said it should be first discussed and approved by the Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC).
Thereafter, Opposition CPI(M) and Congress legislators moved to the well of the House and started raising slogans against the motion.
They staged a walkout from the House, and the motion was passed with a thumping majority.
Government Chief Whip Kalyani Roy also moved another congratulatory resolution on the recently concluded Tripura three-tier panchayat elections that were swept by the ruling BJP.
