With several casualties being feared as the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and another train from Yeswanthpur to Howrah derailed near Baleswar in Odisha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an ex gratia compensation for the victims.
“An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the train mishap in Odisha. The injured would be given Rs 50,000,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.
Meanwhile, Vaishnaw took to Twitter to share that the families of those deceased would receive a compensation amount of Rs 10 lakh, those with grievous injuries Rs 2 lakh and those who suffered minor injuries Rs 50,000.

“Rushing to the site in Odisha. My prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured and condolences to the bereaved families. Rescue teams mobilised from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata. NDRF, State govt. teams and Airforce also mobilised. Will take all hands required for the rescue ops,” the Union Railways Minister further stated.
“At around 7pm, 10-12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed near Baleswar and fell on the opposite track. After some time, another train from Yeswanthpur to Howrah dashed into those derailed coaches resulting in the derailment of its 3-4 coaches,” railway spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said.
