The National Medical Commission (NMC) Wednesday asked all medical colleges to submit details of the stipends paid to interns and resident doctors by April 23.
The move comes after the Supreme Court asked the apex medical education regulator to submit details of stipends paid by every college across all states.
The SC direction came in a case of non-payment of stipends to MBBS students during their internship.
The NMC has asked all colleges to submit details of the stipend paid by their respective state government and the stipend paid by college and its month-wise breakup. The data sought by the NMC is not only for MBBS interns, but also post graduate students who work as junior residents and super-speciality students who work as senior residents in the associated hospital.
The notice states that from 2024-25 onwards, the colleges would have to upload the details of stipend paid each month, by the fifth of the month, on their own website. It also asked the colleges to submit a complete statement at the end of the year to the NMC. An online survey conducted by the body last year found that more than 2,000 of the 7,901 responses from the PG students of private medical colleges said that they were not receiving any stipend. Nearly 4,300 students said that their stipend was not equal to the stipend being paid in government medical colleges. Notably, 1,228 students said that their stipend was being taken back by the college management.
