A BEGUSARAI court on Friday declared Bihar’s former social welfare minister Manju Verma an absconder and allowed state police to attach properties belonging to her. The former minister has been absconding in an Arms Act case. The CBI has also been looking for her in the Muzaffarpur shelter home abuse case.
The police have been under pressure to arrest the former minister after the Supreme Court recently pulled up the state police and asked DGP K S Dwivedi to appear before it on November 27.
The Manjhaul court of additional chief judicial magistrate directed Begusarai police to attach Verma’s property at Cheria Bariarpur. The CBI had seized over 50 live cartridges of three types of weapons during a raid at the former minister’s residence. The minister’s husband Chandra Shekhar Verma has already surrendered before the court.
Bihar DGP Dwivedi said the police had been waiting for the court’s order to attach Verma’s property. “A criminal should be treated like one,” said the DGP, adding that the state police had been conducting raids at several places in search of the former minister.
Meanwhile, JD (U) suspended Verma from the party for having caused embarrassment to the government and the party. RJD called it a “belated move by JD (U)”.
