Police said Rana’s husband, Prince Rana, a gym instructor, and his family members were booked under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (using obscene language), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC.
“We are taking this case very seriously and have asked Rani Rana to provide us with any other evidence if possible. We will investigate the case accordingly and will present our case before the local court,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rishikesh Meena.
Rani, a resident of Morar in Gwalior, represented India in the U-23 World Championships in 2019. She also won gold in the nationals the same year.
She has alleged that her husband and his family were demanding Rs 5 lakh from her and also recently assaulted her after she objected to their allegedly abusing her father. She alleged her family had already given Rs 10 lakh to her in-laws to purchase a car but they kept demanding more.
“They took the money that I won during my wrestling competitions and then they just kept demanding money,” she alleged, adding that her in-laws also told her parents to “take your daughter away or we will kill her”.
She said she filed the FIR to “fight for my rights”.
“For three years I suffered and now I am showing bravery. They say that without a husband, you are nothing. That was the fear that they filled inside me. I suffered over the years until I realised that a woman can walk alone, for herself, for the coming generations, that’s why I took this step,” she added.
