In a bid to improve academic standards in school education, Kerala government Wednesday decided to make minimum marks of 30 per cent mandatory for promotion to the next classes.

Minimum marks for all subjects in the annual examinations of class 8, 9 and 10 was one of the recommendations of an education conclave held in May this year. The cabinet ratified the recommendation, which was earlier flayed by pro-Left teachers organisations in the state.

Accordingly, minimum marks for all subjects will be introduced at class-8 in the current academic year. This condition will be introduced in the class-nine in 2025-26 and in class ten in 2026-27.

As per the existing valuation system, a class-ten student needs to get a minimum of 20 marks out of 80 marks in each subject to become eligible for higher education. Till last academic year, students need to get only ten marks in the written exam (80 marks) and five marks for a written exam of 40.

This was introduced in the past as part of promoting all students, a step identified to stem the student dropout.
