With a large number of weapons looted from armouries of security forces yet to be recovered, gun-related violence continued unabated in strife-torn Manipur.
At least two persons, including a woman, sustained bullet injuries in separate incidents while armed miscreants assaulted a Naga man in the state in the past 48 hours.
On Wednesday, a 25-year-old man from Bishnupur district was injured after being shot by armed assailants. Police sources said the incident occurred around 12:10 am along the Ningthoukhong-ITI road, within the jurisdiction of Bishnupur Police Station. The injured has been identified as Khwairakpam Amarjit, a resident of Thamnapokpi Mayai Leikai, Bishnupur district. He suffered a bullet injury near his left collarbone and is undergoing treatment at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police have registered a case.
The same day, an 18-year-old woman, identified as Sinam Lanchenbi, was injured by a stray bullet. Police sources said the incident occurred around 7:30 pm Wednesday while she was at her hostel at Lamphel in Imphal West district. Lachenbi, who was hit by the bullet in her lower hip, is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Imphal. Police launched an investigation.
In a separate incident, a Rongmei Naga man was allegedly assaulted after being abducted by armed miscreants suspected to be of Arambai Tengol, a valley-based outfit.
The Rongmei Naga Students’ Organisation, Manipur, (RNSOM) said the incident occurred on November 5, near a Rongmei village in Imphal East district. The student body said the victim, identified, as Joshua Kamei of Kambiron-Noney district, was subjected to severe torture. Kamei is working as a driver in a construction company engaged in Imphal-Jiribam railway works. Condemning the incident, RNSOM demanded swift investigation in the case.
The incident comes days after two Poumai Naga men were assaulted by armed miscreants in Imphal West district.
