A day after the gruesome murder of three members of a family in New Janakpuri area of Ludhiana sent shock waves across the city, police on Saturday solved the case with the arrest of a neighbour. On Friday, Chaman Lal (74), his wife Surinder Kaur (70), and his mother Surjit Kaur alias Jeeto (95) were found dead inside their house.

Ludhiana police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu, while addressing a press conference Saturday, said that the case was solved within 24 hours with the arrest of Robin alias Munna (42), who lived next door. Sidhu said that Robin held a grudge against Surinder as she used to taunt him for not having a child despite being married for more than five years. So he hacked three of them to death with a hammer and then tried to set the house on fire to portray it as a fire incident.

CP Sidhu said that Robin was rounded up for questioning late on Friday and he confessed to the crime. “He told during questioning that he and his wife were childless even after five years of marriage due to which Surinder Kaur used to taunt him regularly even in front of other neighbors. He felt humiliated so he decided to kill her but ended up killing the trio,” said the CP.

He added that the accused also tried to destroy evidence. He tried to set the house on fire after the crime by puncturing a gas cylinder pipe and lighting incense sticks to show that the trio died in a fire but incidentally, the flames were not ignited and the house did not catch fire, said the CP.

Police also recovered a video camera, seven cassettes, a mobile phone, a briefcase and some documents that the accused, who is an auto-rickshaw driver, stole from the house.

Police said that during interrogation, the accused said that on Thursday morning when he was feeding chickens on his roof, Surinder came upstairs and again taunted him. He got furious, took an hammer, and scaled the common wall around 6.15 am to enter their house. However, Kaur was in the washroom so he hid himself and waited for her to come out. He attacked and killed her as soon as she came out. Soon, hearing her cries, Lal and Jeeto woke up and he first hacked Lal and then killed Jeeto.

JCP city Saumya Mishra said that after the crime, the accused opened the knob of LPG gas cylinder, punctured the pipe so that gas spreads in the house and also lit incense sticks so that house catches fire but the plan did not work out.

CP Sidhu said that the accused was also captured in a CCTV camera as he had started sprinkling water outside his own house anticipating that the victims’ house would soon catch fire. An FIR for murder was registered at Salem Tabri police station on the complaint of Lal’s nephew Rinku. The accused was produced before a local court and was sent to three-day police remand. The arrival of the couple’s four sons settled abroad is awaited for cremations.
