Scrap Liberhan report lock, stock and barrel: BJP

NDA allies were engaged in a heated exchange on the Liberhan report with a Shiv Sena MP saying there was nothing shameful in the demolition of the 'mud structure'.

NDA allies were engaged in a heated exchange with other parties in the Lok Sabha over the Ayodhya issue after a Shiv Sena member said there was nothing shameful about the demolition of a “mud structure” and his party was proud of it.

Participating in the resumed discussion on the Liberhan Commission report,Ananth Geete asserted that after the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya his party supremo Bal Thackeray was the only leader who said if Shiv Sainiks were involved in the act,he was proud of it.

This led UPA and other members to shout “shame, shame”. Hitting back,Geete said,”What shame? Kis baat ke liye shame (shame for what)? There is nothing wrong in demolishing a structure built by Babar,an outsider who invaded India.”

The Shiv Sena leader further argued that the whole country was “crying over demolition of a mud structure”,leading several members from the minority community to object. He corrected himself only to say it was a “stone structure”.

He accused Muslim members of the House, cutting across party lines,of protesting the mention by BJP President Rajnath Singh in his speech yesterday of Deoband cleric Ali Mian’s alleged stand on the disputed structure.

“But they are secular while we are communal. What message are we giving from this House?” Geete asked.

Scrap Liberhan report,demands BJP

The BJP joined the Shiv Seba in criticising BJP and said that the Liberhan Commission report on the demolition of Babri Masjid should be scrapped “lock, stock and barrel”,warning that it has the potential to whip up communal frenzy in the country.

Deputy leader of the party in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj also sought to dare the government by declaring that its leaders “inside and outside Parliament” were ready for any punishment.

Participating in a debate on the report, she questioned the motives of Justice Liberhan in indicting her party leaders,as she dubbed the report as a document authored by “an opportunist” with political intentions.

Seeking to drag Prime Minister Manmohan Singh into the issue, she said at the time of demolition in December 1992,he was the Finance Minister in the then P V Narasimha Rao government and could not escape the responsibility.

“In the name of God,you (the Home Minister) should disown the report,as it can cause communal discord and whip up communal passion and violence in the country. Scrap this report lock, stock and barrel,” she said.
