Claiming that the tide was turning towards them in West Bengal, the CPI(M) on Monday said the people in Maoist violence-hit areas were realising the “threats” posed by extremists who were being “patronised” by the Trinamool Congress.
“People in these areas are now turning around. They have started realising the threats being posed by the Maoists and their patrons Trinamool Congress,” party Politburo member Sitaram Yechury told reporters here.
Replying to questions,he said the mass gathering at last week’s public meeting of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in Midnapore was a “clear indication” that CPI (M) was regaining its lost strength in Maoist-affected areas.
“The political killings of our activists is still continuing. The Maoists are even now being actively backed by the Trinamool Congress,” Yechury said.
His Politburo colleague Biman Bose said the people in these areas of West Bengal were coming out to protest the violence “unleashed by the Maoist-Trinamool Congress combine”.
Bose was supported by senior party colleague and state minister Nirupam Sen,who said the situation in Maoist-affected areas was changing.
In its strongest base of West Bengal, the CPI(M) has suffered several electoral reverses apart from having lost about 200 workers to violence by Maoists.
Bose had yesterday lambasted Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee charging her with being “a messenger of unrest” as she had planned to hold a rally in Midnapore on October six to counter the impact of Bhattacharjee’s public meeting. “Her visit is aimed at creating anarchy,” Bose had said in Kolkata.
