According to a study by the National Institute of Oceanography, the sea-level has risen by 1.06 to 1.75 millimeters per year in the past century,Rajya Sabha was informed.
“This estimate is consistent with the estimated global sea-level rise of 1-2 millimeters per year made by the Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),” state finance minister Namo Narain Meena, currently holding the charge of Environment Ministry, said in reply to a written query.
He said the study of the tide gauge records of the north Indian ocean has been conducted by the National Institute of Oceanography for more than 40 years.
As per India’s first national communication,a one meter sea level rise is projected to displace approximately 7.1 million people in India and about 5,764 sq km of land area will be lost.
Meena said there was no proposal for setting up a Mission for Coastal and island ecological security. “However, the Committee under the chairmanship of M S Swaminathan has recommended a separate island protection zone notification for the integrated management of the islands,” he added.
