Centre seeks report from W Bengal on clashes

Centre sought a report from West Bengal govt over the attack on Congress MLAs allegedly by Left supporters,leading to violence in which one person was killed.

Centre on Thursday sought a report from the West Bengal government over the attack on Congress MLAs allegedly by Left supporters,leading to violence in which one person was killed and several injured.

Home Secretary G K Pillai spoke to state Chief Secretary Ashok M Chakrabarti and asked him to submit a report on the incident.

“The Home Ministry will decide on future course of action after receiving the report,” Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters here.

Protesting against yesterday’s attack,Congress supporters clashed with police in Mangolkot in which one person was killed and several others were injured.

Nine vehicles were torched by protesters,who blocked rail and road traffic in Kolkata and some south Bengal districts.

Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee met Chidambaram and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and apprised them of the situation in the state.

Banerjee has accused the ruling Left Front of unleashing a “reign of terror” on Opposition parties following its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections and sought Centre’s intervention in the matter.
