CCS meeting discusses Varanasi blast,security scene

The meeting also took stock of the country's overall security situation and measures taken.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met on Wednesday and is understood to have discussed about the Varanasi blast and the overall security situation in the country.

According to sources,the CCS,headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,was briefed by Home Minister P Chidambaram,who returned from the temple town on Wednesday,about the incident,groups suspected to be behind it and steps being taken to nab the culprits.

The meeting also took stock of the country’s overall security situation and measures taken.

Terror struck Varanasi on Tuesday when a low-intensity blast ripped through a crowded bathing ghat on the banks of the Ganges river during evening prayers killing a child and injuring 37 people,including six foreigners.

Meanwhile,Germany and France condemned the bomb blast in Varanasi and expressed their condolences to the victims of the attack.

Deputy Head of the German Embassy Christian-Matthias Schlaga met Home Secretary G K Pillai to express Germany’s deepest condolences over the Varanasi blast that took place last evening.

Schlaga condemned the horrific act and said that Germany was with India in this hour of need.

“France most firmly condemns yesterday’s terrorist blast in Varanasi,which claimed one life and injured several tens of people,” a French Embassy spokesperson said.

He said a French national was slightly affected and was taken care of at the local hospital.

“We convey our condolences to the family of the victim of this dastardly and cruel act,and assure the injured as well as the government and the people of India of our solidarity and sympathy,” the spokesperson said.
