Bring NGOs,corporates,media in Lokpal ambit: members

A Parliamentary panel began examining the Lokpal Bill.

A Parliamentary panel on Friday began examining the Lokpal Bill with presentations from a section of the civil society and demands from members for inclusion of NGOs,corporate houses and the media in the ambit of the ombudsman.

The Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar was scheduled to make a presentation before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on on Personnel,Public Grievances,Law and Justice but it had to be deferred as the deposition by civil society members stretched on for long hours.

Activists Aruna Roy,Shekhar Singh and Nikhil Dey under the aegis of National Campaign for Peoples’ Right to Information (NCPRI) briefed the Committee on their version of the Lokpal Bill.

They were of the opinion that Lokpal Bill alone would not suffice to check corruption and other legislations including the Judicial Accountability Bill,Public Grievances Bill,and the Whistleblowers Protection Bill.

Jayprakash Narayan of Loksatta Party also made a presentation of his version of the Lokpal Bill before the Committee and stressed that the Centre can enact a law to set up Lokayukta in states.

He also favoured that the Central Vigilance Commission can be integrated with the Lokpal.

RJD’s Lalu Prasad and other members underlined the supremacy of Parliament which was agreed to by Roy and Narayan.

A section of the Committee including Meenakshi Natarajan (Cong) are understood to have favoured inclusion of the corporate sector in the ambit of the Lokpal.
