A batch of 13 students from Manipur, who were forced to discontinue their college midway due to violence, on Tuesday reached the University of Kannur in Kerala to resume their studies. Last month, the university in North Kerala had announced to open its doors for such students from the strife-torn state. A decision in this regard was taken by the University Syndicate after student bodies in Manipur had approached the university seeking admission for the students. Taking a cue from the gesture of the university, an affiliated college — Don Bosco College at Angadikadavu in Kannur — admitted three students, who were languishing at a relief camp. These students were brought to Kannur by the Manipur province of Catholic congregation Salesians of Don Bosco. Two months back, a student from Manipur was given admission in Class III in a government school in Thiruvananthapuram. University official sources said more such students are likely to join the university in the coming days. “Around 70 students, most of them pursuing post-graduation courses, have applied for to the university. Of them, 48 want to join PG courses, while others for graduate programmes.’’ Sources said the first batch include students of LLB, BBA and PhD courses. “They would be accommodated in colleges or university departments where such courses are being offered now. If seats are not available, slots would be created for them. There would not be any issue as far as continuing the courses they had studied in Manipur is concerned. Colleges would take care of their accommodation,” sources said. At present, the university would not insist on eligibility certificates but later degrees would be awarded only on production of all relevant documents and certificates.
