(Source: File)A man from Kerala’s Kollam was arrested Thursday for allegedly throwing hot curry on his wife after she refused to take part in occult rituals, police said.
The police arrested Sajeer from Kollam’s Edamulackal village and charged him for voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The arrest came on the back of a complaint from the wife, Rejila Gafoor, who’s been admitted to a local hospital.
According to the police, the couple had visited an “occult practitioner” who recommended certain rituals for her health issues, which Sajeer wanted to perform at home. He had allegedly bought some metal sheets and powder for the purpose. When Rejila, forced to unbraid her hair and sit before him, refused to proceed, an enraged Sajeer allegedly threw hot fish curry, simmering on the stove, at her face in front of their 9-year-old son.
In 2022, the Kerala government had drafted the ‘Kerala Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices, Sorcery and Black Magic Bill, 2022’ — a proposed law to penalise occult practices — based on recommendations from the Kerala Law Reforms Commission. It was later dropped. During a hearing in June this year, the state government told the high court it had decided not to enact the law, calling it a policy decision.
