‘Will lead to peace, stability in wider region’: India welcomes Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire

India on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, expressing hope that it would foster “peace and stability” across the wider region.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based group, reportedly came into effect early on Wednesday morning.

“We welcome the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that has been announced. We have always called for de-escalation, restraint, and a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. We hope these developments will lead to peace and stability in the wider region,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated.

Earlier in October, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the conflict in West Asia as a matter of “great concern” and “deep worry.” He noted that in a globalised world, conflicts in any region inevitably cause ripple effects elsewhere.

“Honestly, whether it is the conflict in Ukraine or the conflict in the Middle East (West Asia), these are major sources of instability and concern,” Jaishankar remarked at an event.

Reports from international media indicated that long-displaced residents of southern Lebanon had begun returning to their homes amidst celebrations, just hours after the ceasefire took effect.
