The Southwest monsoon is advancing in the Arabian Sea, causing rain in the western and some southern parts of India. Meanwhile, cyclone circulations are leading to thunderstorms in the east. Meanwhile, northern and central parts of India continue to swelter in the heat as maximum temperatures rise to 46 degrees Celsius.
Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into more parts of central Arabian Sea and marked its arrival in Karnataka, some more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh and most parts of the Bay of Bengal.
Thunderstorms occurred at isolated places over parts of Maharashtra, including Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, and Konkan and Goa witnessed rainfall causing temperature drop in the region. Monsoon is likely to reach Mumbai between June 9 and 10, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Sunil Kamble, as reported by PTI.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts starting Thursday.
Heavy rainfall was also recorded in parts of the south like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Mahe, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and also in the East in states of West Bengal, Sikkim Assam and Meghalaya further reaching some states in North and South too, like Uttarakhand and Andaman and Nicobar respectively.
Maximum temperatures in the range of 43-46 degrees Celsius were recorded over Haryana, Delhi and at isolated pockets over Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh. The highest maximum temperature of 46.2 degrees Celsius was recorded at Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Rise in maximum temperatures is likely over East India and no significant change in temperatures over northwest India has been predicted. Thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds are likely over south peninsular India over the next 4-5 days.
Isolated heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the northeastern region, including states of Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra and the peninsular south region. Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some parts of south Chhattisgarh and South Odisha and remaining parts of Bay of Bengal during next 3-4 days.
