Scripting another chapter in its history,Delhi Metro today inaugurated the much-awaited Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar corridor,paving the way for thousands of people from east Delhi and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh to enjoy Metro comfort.
Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit flagged off the first train at the Yamuna Bank station and travelled on the Metro till Anand Vihar station.
The section will be thrown open to public from 6 am Thursday.
The 6.25 km fully-elevated line passes through residential institutional areas of East Delhi and passengers can hope to reach Anand Vihar from Yamuna Bank in just about 11 minutes,as compared to 40 minutes by road.
The line will benefit thousands of people living in east Delhi and adjoining Ghaziabad and other parts of Uttar Pradesh.
DMRC estimates that the daily traffic on this line in 2011 will be 1,03,450 people.
Inaugurating the line,Reddy exuded confidence that the DMRC will throw open all its lines on the Phase-II before the Commonwealth Games in October this year.
All projects relating to Commonwealth Games will be completed by September 2010 before the games begin in October.
I am hopeful everything will be completed on time, he said.
He also commended DMRC chief E Sreedharan and other officials on the launch.
