Voter hands over Rs 12,000 to EC to prove he was bribed

The man had alleged that he received the money at his residence on February 13, the day of polling.

A voter from Srirangam constituency, where Assembly bypolls were held last month, has complained to the Election Commission that he was paid Rs 12,000 so that he and five members of his family would vote for a particular candidate. To back his claim, he has given the EC a demand draft he received.

The man had alleged that he received the money at his residence on February 13, the day of polling.

The Assembly seat fell vacant after former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was disqualified following her conviction in the disproportionate assets case in September last year.

The EC did not specify which party was responsible for the alleged bribe.

The complainant said he was forced to accept the cash. The EC has asked the Srirangam police to register a case and probe the matter. Inspector of police at Srirangam D Sivasubramaniam said, “We have launched a probe. No culprits have been arrested yet.” The case has been registered under sections 171(B), 171(C) and 171(E) of the IPC. Police said the complaint refers to 10 people of a political party and they are trying to ascertain their whereabouts.

Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu Sandeep Saxena refused to comment on issue. Sources said the EC has taken the matter seriously as it had received a dozen similar complaints from individuals and political parties before the bypolls.
