There is shock and disbelief at Baskwara -—55 km from Dharamshala in Himachal’s Kangra district — ever since news reached that its son, Lakhbir Singh, was among the CRPF personnel killed in the Maoist attack at Bastar in Chhattisgarh Tuesday. Lakhbir (48) had retired from the Army three years back before joining the CRPF. “My son was brave. Had it not been an ambush, he would have killed a dozen enemies,” said Lakhbir’s father, Capt (retd) Harnam Singh (70).
In Punjab, Balwinder Kaur (26)- from Bharoli in Nawanshahr district – is yet to recover from the shock that she slumped into ever since her uncle broke the news that her father, Tilak Raj Singh (58), was among the CRPF victims. Tilak Raj also retired from the Army in 2007 before joining the CRPF.
In Haryana, CRPF Inspector Subhash Chander Dalal had fixed the marriages of both his sons – Viraj and Deepak – for November before rejoining duty last month. Tragically, he won’t attend them now. His family members say that neither the CRPF nor the district administration informed them about his death and that they found out through the internet.

‘He was only earning member of family’
GUWAHATI: Mohammad Faizul Haque, one of the 15 security personnel killed in Tuesday’s Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh, was the only earning member of a family in village Ghilani in central Assam, and had promised to help find his younger brother Ziaul a job next time he came home. “He was the only earning member of our family of five which includes our ailing mother,” said Md Ziaul Haque, over the telephone from Ghilani, about 460 km east of Guwahati, in Nagaon district. Thirty-year-old Faizul, who had studied up to Class XII, had joined the CRPF in 2006. ENS
