Uttarakhand govt appoints new chief secretary

Subhash Kumar, whom Shankar replaced as the chief secretary, has been appointed as the new chairman of the state electricity regulatory board.

N Ravi Shankar, a 1980-batch IAS officer who returned from the Central deputation on Monday, has been appointed as the new chief secretary of Uttarakhand. Shankar joined his new office in Dehradun in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Subhash Kumar, whom Shankar replaced as the chief secretary, has been appointed as the new chairman of the state electricity regulatory board. Kumar has taken VRS.

Soon after taking charge of the chief secretary’s office, Shankar told reporters that he would ensure proper implementation of the schemes which are on the priority list of the state government. Soon after joining the office, Shankar held meeting with the senior officials. “It was just an introductory meeting. He got introductions of the senior officials,” a source in the state bureaucracy said. According to him, Shankar was on central deputation since September 2007 and thus, he wanted to become face to face with all senior officials posted in the state secretariat.

Born on July 4, 1955, Shankar is considered to be an upright officer and he has vast experience in serving the state as well as the Centre. He has done his graduation in electrical engineering, besides PG Diploma is management.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat has selected him as his new chief secretary at a time when the state government has undertaken massive reconstruction and rehabilitation works in the disaster-hit areas. “Shankar has good connections in the Central government and thus, he would be in position to ensure Uttarakhand’s better relation with the Centre,” a source close to the chief minister Rawat told The Indian Express.
