Udhampur attack: NIA extends judicial custody of Pakistani terrorist Naveed

The Special Judge for NIA Cases, Y P Kotwal in Jammu on Friday extended for another 14 days the judicial custody of Mohammad Naveed, Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist from Pakistan, who along with an aide had attacked a BSF convoy killing two paramilitary personnel and injuring nearly a dozen others at Narsu nullah on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur district early last month.

This followed NIA’s request seeking extension in his judicial custody by another fortnight, sources said. Naveed, who was brought before court in tight security in the morning, was taken back to jail following court’s orders.

Meanwhile, NIA officials had also brought Showkat Ahmed Bhat, truck driver arrested in the matter from Valley on Tuesday, to court for seeking permission to conduct Norco test on him. However, they had a rethinking at the last minute and they did not present application for it before the judge, sources added.

Showkat had carried in his truck Naveed and his slain aide Nomen among four Pakistani terrorists from Baba Reshi in Baramulla to South Kashmir soon after they infiltrated into the state from across the LoC. Pointing out that the other two infiltrating terrorists included Abu Akasha and Mohammed Bhai, both Pakistanis, sources said that Showkat was remanded to the NIA custody for 14 days by the Special Judge Kotwal on Wednesday.

Another truck driver Khursheed Ahmed Bhat has also been arrested in the matter for transporting Naveed and Noman to Jammu for reconnaissance. On August 27, he was sent to judicial custody in high security Kot Bhalwal jail by the special judge.

Naveed along with Noman had attacked a BSF convoy on the national highway in Udhampur early last month. While Noman was killed in retaliatory fire by paramilitary personnel, Naveed was captured alive by local villagers at a nearby villager where he had fled soon after the terror attack.
