Asaram doesn’t need surgery: Medical board

The SC said that medical report submitted in the court does not recommend surgery for Asaram.

Diminishing chances of bail, a medical board set up to examine medical conditions of Asaram has opined that the self-styled “godman”, currently in jail in connection with a sexual assault case, does not require any surgery and that his aliments can be managed through medicines.

The report was submitted in the Supreme Court by the board, which was constituted on the order of the court to ascertain whether Asaram should be allowed to walk out on bail due to his medical conditions.

“The opinion of half-a-dozen doctors of AIIMS is that at present any surgical intervention is not required. He can be treated in OPD. Now what remains in this?” said a bench of Justices T S Thakur and Adarsh Kumar Goel, reading out from the report. Senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for Asaram, sought some time to go through the report and revert. The bench then fixed the matter for January 20 and asked its Registry to supply the copies of the report to the parties, including the accused.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat High Court on Monday rejected the bail application of Asaram in connection with a rape case lodged against him by a Surat-based woman. Asaram has been lodged in Jodhpur jail for more than a year in the other sexual assault case.

While rejecting the application Justice AJ Desai noted, “Prima facie, what I found is that, how a downtrodden girl was initially influenced with the behaviour of the applicant (Asaram). A teenager girl from a family of labourers is bound to be influenced if certain special treatment is given to her though unaware about the dirty intention of the so- called guru.”
