Solar units on govt building rooftops

To achieve the twin goal of optimum utilisation of solar energy and catering to electricity demand by generating power for renewable sources of energy, the Punjab government is set to establish solar energy units on the rooftop of all government buildings by 2017.

Disclosing this on Tuesday,a government spokesperson said a special plan has also been formulated to install such units at 120 police stations and 45 schools of Kalgidhar Trust. “The solar energy units of 2.5 KW capacity will be installed at police stations, which will be used to power lights, computers and other electrical appliances. These units will be connected to nearby grids so that surplus power can be supplied to nearby localities,” he said.

According to the New and Renewable Sources of energy policy,a survey has been conducted across the state for installing solar power plants on government buildings. As many as 1,572 government buildings have been identified for the purpose, out of which,448 belong to border areas. Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has been asked to expedite work in this regard.

The survey for installing such plants at schools under Kalgidhar Trust has also been completed. About 5 to 15 KW power will be produced in each of these schools.

PEDA has already started the work of installing 26 power plants with a capacity of 693 KW in Amritsar,Tarn Taran and Gurdsapur, said an official. Further,to boost the state’s crop diversification programme,500 solar energy irrigation pumps were being installed on which a subsidy of Rs 5 crore has been approved by the government.
