SC stays Lokayukta probe against MP Agriculture Minister

The Bench also issued a notice to former Samajwadi Party MLA Kishore Samrite.

In a reprieve for the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh, the Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Lokayukta probe against state’s Agriculture Minister Gauri Shankar Bisen in an alleged corruption case.

A bench led by Chief Justice R M Lodha stayed the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court for a Lokayukta probe against one of the BJP’s senior most leaders for allegedly amassing huge wealth in various parts of the state.

The Bench also issued a notice to former Samajwadi Party MLA Kishore Samrite, on whose PIL the High Court had last month called for a probe. Bisen was inducted into the Chouhan cabinet after the BJP recorded a victory in the Assembly elections last year.

According to Samrite’s PIL, Bisen, who is an MLA from the Balaghat constituency, had amassed unaccounted wealth. It was alleged that he bought two flats in Pune in his daughter and wife’s names — worth Rs 50 lakh and Rs 90 lakh, respectively — land worth Rs 2.50 crore and a sanitary pipe manufacturing factory. Samrite reportedly used the details of properties submitted by Bisen in his affidavits to the Election Commission from 2003-2011 to cite a case of disproportionate assets.
