The 18th century Safdarjang Tomb, which is the fifth monument to be illuminated by floodlights so far in the city ahead of Commonwealth Games, will be lit up every evening for about three hours. The initiative is part of the Union Ministry of Tourism's project to illuminate 13 heritage monuments. However, viewers will have to watch the monument from outside the compound as it is not open to the public after dark. By July, the remaining eight monuments will also be illuminated as part of phase 1 of the project. Around 33 more monuments identified by the Archaelogical Survey of India will be illuminated under phase 2. The project's aim is to light up Delhi's monuments and to use the Commonwealth Games to showcase the city's culture and promote night tourism.
