SAD(A) president challenges jail manual,files PIL

Mann submitted that these were in violation of Articles 19,21 and 25 of the Indian Constitution.

Contending that the Punjab Jail Manual did not provide rules to hear condemned prisoners or their family members regarding last wishes and communication to the family of the prisoners regarding execution,a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday.

Simranjit Singh Mann,president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar),filed the PIL,which is likely to come up for hearing on Thursday. In his PIL,Mann submitted that the Punjab Jail Manual did not provide rules to provide communication to the family of the condemned prisoner regarding the execution of condemned prisoner by jail authorities.

The petition also read that there were no clear rules for handing over the body of the prisoner to family members. Mann submitted that these were in violation of Articles 19,21 and 25 of the Indian Constitution.
