The Shiromani Akali Dal Tuesday opposed the imposition of wealth tax on farm land terming the Centres decision a serious blow to the farming community already reeling under high debt.
Party secretary and spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said the decision to impose 1% tax on the collector rate for agricultural land falling within 8km of the municipal limit would crush farmers of Punjab. As per the Centres decision, more than 70% of the farmers of the state would have to pay this tax,he said, adding that it was strange that the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre was taking one step after the other to harm the debt-ridden peasantry.
Cheema said taxing the farmers was an an ill-conceived and harsh step by the Congress-led UPA government, which had proved to be a government of dealers working to benefit the corporate lobby.
The UPA government has badly failed in managing the economy of the country. Instead of helping the farmers, the Union government has taken a series of anti-farmer decisions, including withdrawal of subsidy on fertilisers, decontrolling the diesel prices and not providing adequate MSP for the farm produce. It is surprising that the government took another thoughtless decision, which displays its inability to understand the ground reality, he added.
He also expressed concern that as per collector rates in the state, farmers would have to shell out in taxes an amount that is many times more than their annual income from their land.
The partys core committee will meet on Thursday to discuss the issue and chalk out a strategy against the anti-farmer move,he added.
