Rlys sanctions recruitment of 2,500 TTEs

This is the largest induction drive for TTEs in one go in recent years.

The Railways Ministry has sanctioned the recruitment of 2,500 Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTE) across the country to catch ticketless passengers.

Faced with the peculiar problem of shrinking volume of passenger bookings despite the trains running full, the Railways had been doing some soul searching.

It was found that in the peak season of April-May, the fall in the number of passengers was nearly 18 million, compared to the number of passengers during the same time last year. It turned out that a large number of people were travelling without tickets, but because of the paucity of manpower in Railways, they escaped largely undetected.

To confirm this, the authorities carried out surprise checks at Mumbai and Lucknow, recently. In one night, the number of those travelling without tickets was found to be 2,000.

While it is agreed that the only way to put a check on this is to apprehend the offenders, the problem is that the Railways is short of TTEs.

The ministry, therefore set out to induct 6,000 TTEs and got the sanction to recruit 2,500 in the first phase. This is the largest induction drive for TTEs in one go in recent years.
