The rescue of a truck driver and his helper who had been injured in a road accident was delayed by at least 30 minutes in Giridih district on Tuesday morning as passersby were busy making off with sacks of the detergent the truck was ferrying.
The accident took place within the district’s Municipal police station limits at around 9.30 in the morning; the driver dozed off, forcing the truck off the road. People who converged at the site noticed that the load was sacks of detergent powder by a popular brand.
“People were busy walking away with the sacks that no one informed the police station, 15 minutes away. By the time my men got to know and reached the spot, more than half the load and half an hour had been lost,” said Superintendent of Police Kranti Kumar Garhdeshi.
Footage by regional news channels showed the driver and his helper, who had crawled to a nearby field, lying down with no one helping them. Policemen secured the site and chased away those leaving with the detergent.
